Washington Post investigators published a review of how anti-anemia drugs were promoted even though the placebo group had a lower mortality then the high dose anti-anemia drugs.
It is a familiar story. The drug company conducts trials and convinces the FDA that there is benefit of drug. The clinical study is not released by the FDA, and the drug company published a sanitized version of the study in the New England Journal of Medicine. The drug is approved. The drug company pays doctors millions in discounted price, so the more the doctors prescribe the more they make. Some doctors making $100,000 to $300,000 a year just by prescribing the drug that has no benefit and causes more mortality then placebo.
How many such stories have to come out before we as a society determine that this is not a good thing?
